VNCed 0.3.2 Virus Total Report [False Positives]

Having just run a 'Virus Total' report on the 'VNCed' it has come to my attention that the detection ratio is 2 out of 39. The two virus scanners that flagged it up as a virus are ClamAV and TheHacker.
  • ClamAV identifies VNCed as 'PUA.Tool.Injector.SQLmap'
  • TheHacker identifies VNCed as ' Trojan/Spy.Zbot.avtn'
Now as mentioned in my previous blog post regarding 'VNCed uninstallers' these virus reports are false. I recommend you only download from the links off the main VNCed website, all files are hosted on SourceForge and have been uploaded by myself.

I have heard of ClamAV, but the 'TheHacker' I have never heard of. If anyone has any idea about it please let me know.

  • Changing Preview windows size (right-click)
  • Changing Preview Window Interval (timeout on the preview window)
  • Taking a screenshot
  • Blanking the Monitor and Disabling Inputs, then re-enabling them

Using VNCed Part 1

Finally I have got around to doing a video on how to setup and use VNCed (open-source VNC monitoring tool). This video shows how to run VNCed, connect to a PC running VNC (in this case, UltraVNC and control the client PC using VNCed.

Portable Apps - Weekly Roundup

Updates for 20th January to 27th  January

  • FocusWriter Portable
  • Database Browser Portable
  • Google Chrome Portable 17.0.963.44 Beta
  • Task Coach Portable 1.3.6
  • Google Chrome Portable 16.0.912.77 Stable
  • Opera, Portable Edition 11.61
  • Task Coach Portable 1.3.5
  • LibreOffice Portable 3.4.5
If you haven't heard of portable apps before, a large collection of applications (both freeware and open-source) are provided in a format suitable to be put onto a memory stick. I have also used them for network deployment, for example running VLC Portable from a network folder.

Setting up XAMPP

XAMPP is a very useful tool if you do a lot of PHP and\or MySQL coding. Within a couple of minutes you can have your own web-development environment setup. phpMyAdmin is included as well.

I have done a quick install video showing you the setup. You can use the EXE installer if you wish, but I always prefer to use .zip files and manually set things up where possible. In the video I installed 'XAMPP Windows 1.7.7'

Flash Player Network Install

If you are looking to keep up with flash player updates on your network, it is worth signing up to the Adobe Runtimes / Reader Distribution License Agreement

After signing up to this, you will receive an email from Adobe providing you with links to download exe and\or msi installers for the following...

Adobe Flash Player
Adobe Reader
Adobe AIR
Adobe Shockwave Player

For Flash Player, I mainly use the EXE installers for both IE and Plugin-based browsers, installation for requries the following command

install_flash_player_11_active_x_32bit.exe -install    (IE)
install_flash_player_11_plugin_x_32bit.exe -install    (Firefox etc)

While deploying Flash Player, you will probably also want to disable the flash player updates notification prompt. To do this you need to create a file called mms.cfg this file needs to be saved in UTF-8 format. (use Notepad++...its worth the download!)

Within this file you simply need to put the following line

You then just need to copy mms.cfg to the following location

Windows XP, Vista and 7 (32bit) 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash\'

Windows 7 (64bit) 'C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\'

URL Shorteners

The main website I use, is hosted on Google Sites. While I could buy a domain name and redirect to it, another option is to simply use a short-url. There are number of these available on the net, here are just a few of them and the results you can expect from the generated short-urls.

Long URL -

Google URL Shortener
'qr code' and stats and tracking available when linked to Google account

'qr code' and stats and tracking available

'preview' option available. All it does is show you the long-url before you go to the website
  'qr code' available
  CAPTCHA required before generation

  custom-link and real-time stats available

Paint .NET Network Deployment

Looking to deploy Paint .NET on a network, then you will probably want to generate an MSI in order to distribute it, especially for AD/GPO and ZenWorks environments.

Paint.NET.3.5.10.Install.exe /createmsi CHECKFORUPDATES=0 DESKTOPSHORTCUT=0

The command will generate a 32bit and 64bit MSI. When I ran this command it generated the MSIs in a new folder on the desktop.

There are some additional properties that can be used, but defaults should be fine.

CHECKFORBETAS [off by default]
JPGPNGBMPEDITOR [on by default]
TGAEDITOR [on by default]

Beware of VNCed Removal Tools

If you do a google search for VNCed you may come across a few sites referring to 'VNCed Uninstaller' and removing 'left-over  files/extensions'.

Just to be clear, VNCed is open-source software, it is installed by simple extracting a zip file, it can be uninstalled by simply deleting the folder. VNCed only writes to files with in the application folder, no registry modifications are made.

The VNCed UltraVNC MSI Creator, may write to the registry keys, in order to setup 'MS-Logon ACL details'. These settings are then extracted when building the MSI using MSLogonACL.

SourceForge project websites

All of my currently hosted 'SourceForge' project websites now redirect to my main Google Site development page. The main reason for this is the speed at which I can make changes using Google Sites, plus it is easier to manage everything from one spot.

This only affects the web-page content of the SourceForge pages though, all downloads are still hosted on and should only be download from the SourceForge site directly by following the links from the website.

VNCed UltraVNC MSI Creator

This is a quick video showing VNCed UltraVNC MSI creator in action. As you will be able to see from the video it is very simple to do. You just need to carry out two steps and you end up with an MSI that you can use to deploy UltraVNC on a network.

Screen Capture Software Part 2

After trying out ActivePresenter for the last hour or so, it gets the nod of approval from me. It is very simple to use, the editing options are more than adequate for doing tutorial videos.

You can choose from screen-region capture, application window capture and full screen capture. It supports my current resolution of 1920x1080, I assume it will do higher resolutions as well. Videos can be exported into avi, mp4, webm and wmv.

Here is a quick video (very quick..) I made showing how to use (not that it really needs explaining...

ActivePresenter created a .MP4 and when uploaded to YouTube 720p is selectable as an option. So can't ask for much more from a free app. A timeline editor is included in the app, so it is easy to add addtional text, images or anything else you can think into the captured video.

Screen Capture Software Part 1

Looking to do some YouTube videos?..well I am and I need to find a good piece of freeware to use. So far I have narrowed it down to the following.
After doing some quick testing, I don't think Jing is ideally suited. The only outputting to SWF is a bit annoying.
